Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
We have been helping children and families since 1998. To date we have seen more than 1800 patients.
What is your primary product or service?
We are a family-based day treatment program for the treatment of eating disorders in children and young adults. Children come to our facility 5 days per week and return to their families in the evenings and on weekends.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
We were founded by Dr. Julie O'Toole, a pediatrician by training. As a primary care physician she recognized that children with eating disorders were not getting the care they needed. She founded the Kartini Clinic with the mission to help children and their families to recover from devastating brain disorders such as anorexia nervosa.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
We focus on children. While we take up to age 22 (in accordance with American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines for pediatric specialists) our core mission is children under 12. For this age group in particular, treatment options are very limited and parents are often desperate to find appropriate care (i.e. not adult care) for their children. There are many eating disorder treatment programs for adults, but very few for children. And we aim to be the best treatment center for children in the country.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
Our North Portland location is currently our only one, and we do not have immediate plans to expand to additional sites.
