How long have you been in business?
ACHS was founded in 1978 by Dorene Petersen who is still the College President.
What is your primary product or service?
ACHS specializes in online education for complementary alternative medicine including herbal studies, aromatherapy, holistic nutrition, flower essences, dynamic phytotherapy, iridology, homeopathy, and a full range of core holistic health sciences. The College also features the Apothecary Shoppe College store that offers organic, therapeutic-grade herbs and essential oils as well as how-to natural health kits and reference texts.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
The College President Dorene Petersen graduated with a BA in Archaeology and Anthropology from Otago University, New Zealand and completed her naturopathic training at the South Pacific College of Naturopathy, and acupuncture training at the Holistic Institute of Acupuncture, Hong Kong. She practiced as a Naturopath/Acupuncturist in New Zealand for fifteen years, specializing in Herbal Medicine and Aromatherapy, before moving to the U.S.A. Dorene founded the Australasian College of Herbal Studies in New Zealand in 1978, later expanding with offices in Australia and Hong Kong, and then opening the U.S. office in 1991. Dorene is the Director of the Aromatherapy Registration Council, a non-profit organization instrumental in establishing the National Exam in the USA for Registered Aromatherapists. Licensed Oregon Private Career School Teacher.
Dorene Petersen has over 32 years in the natural health industry and 24 of those have been involved with education within the natural health industry. Before founding the College in New Zealand in 1978 Dorene lectured in natural therapy at the South Pacific College of Natural Therapies, Auckland, NZ.

ACHS's current campus is located in the John's Landing area of SW Portland. We also offer study abroad programs located at facilities in Syros, Greece and on the island of Chios, Greece.

From Interstate 5 (I-5) South, take exit 298, which is Corbett Avenue. Take a right off the exit and stay on Corbett until you reach Pendleton. Take a left (East) on Pendleton. Go two blocks, then take a right (South) onto Hood Avenue.
The College is in the middle of the block on the east side of Hood Avenue. Our address is 5940 SW Hood Avenue. Our phone number is 503-244-0726.
From I-5 North, take exit 299A. The sign will say to John’s Landing and Lake Oswego. The exit puts you on Macadam Avenue. Stay on Macadam until you reach Pendleton. Turn right (West) on Pendleton. Go two blocks, then take a left (South) on Hood Avenue.
